Title: To Create 3D Muscle Models or Not: That is the Question
Speaker: Silvia Salinas Blemker, University of Virginia

Abstract

Musculoskeletal models empower us to push the boundaries of our knowledge of muscle function. Simulations of movement have provided new fundamental insights into muscle function during movement and uncovered how muscles are coordinated to perform movements. Most simulations of human movement rely on simplified one-dimensional representations of muscles. However, in the last two decades, several groups have developed advanced techniques for simulating the complex three-dimensional morphology and behavior of muscle and tendon. Assuming the goal is to maximize scientific and clinical impact of our simulations, when and how should one consider incorporating 3D muscle models into simulations? What are implications of using 3D models on model validation approaches? The goal of this webinar will be to describe the latest developments in 3D muscle modeling and use a range of examples from my lab's research to explore the answers to the above questions.
