Title: Meet Me in the Middle: a Thoracolumbar Spine and Rib Cage Model in OpenSim
Speakers: Alexander Bruno (Exponent) and Dennis Anderson (Harvard University)
Time: Tuesday, November 17, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Standard Time

Abstract

The thorax is arguably the middle of the musculoskeletal system, and yet its biomechanical function has been relatively ignored in musculoskeletal models, where it is frequently depicted as a single rigid body. However, there are multiple areas in biomechanics and rehabilitation research where more realistic modeling of the thorax may be desirable or necessary, such as studies of vertebral fractures, hyperkyphosis, scoliosis, back pain, and respiration.

To support research in these areas, among others, we have developed the first model in OpenSim to include a fully articulated thoracic spine and rib cage, now available at https://simtk.org/home/spine_ribcage. This webinar will:

  • Present an overview of the model development and validation
  • Provide tips on using the model
  • Show examples of model applications

We hope you will meet us in the middle, and find ways in which this new addition to the OpenSim modeling library can benefit your work and that of the OpenSim community.
